ACQUISITIONS
Sunds Defibrator and Kvaerner Pulping have signed an agreement whereby Sunds Defibrator acquires Kvaerner's Twin-Wire Press technology. The agreement covers the acquisition of all product rights related to the Twin-Wire presses.

Thermo Black Clawson has purchased the Goslin Birmingham Div. of Green Bay Packaging. Goslin Birmingham, headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., is a supplier of evaporation, recausticizing, condensate treatment, and noncondensable gas collection systems. It will retain its name as a division of Thermo Black Clawson and will remain headquartered in Birmingham.

Nalco Chemical Co. has acquired the water treatment business of Bycosin AB, a Karlstad, Sweden-based business.

Dow Chemical Co. has acquired the European chelants business of Hampshire Chemical, and has approved a $30 million authorization for its chelants production facility in Freeport, Texas.

Vinings Industries has acquired Applied Research, a Portland, Ore.-based manufacturer of colloidal silica and silica-based frictionizers.

InterBio has announced its acquisition of Polybac Corp. The consolidated operations of the two biotechnology companies will focus on biochemical solutions in the industrial and institutional waste treatment markets.

Datastream Systems Inc., a developer of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) headquartered in Greenville, S.C., has acquired Strategic Information Systems Pte. Ltd. (SIS), a developer of CMMS headquartered in Singapore. In a separate action, Datastream signed a letter of intent to acquire its largest regional distributor, Australia-based Datastream Pacific Pty Ltd.

Dyno Industrier ASA, a supplier of amino cross-linking resins, has entered into an agreement with Cytec Industries Inc. USA, for the sale of the product area amino crosslinkers for coatings.

ITT Fluid Technology Corp., a pump producer, has reached an agreement with Kennametal Inc. to acquire its subsidiary, Rule Industries, a manufacturer of marine products.

Prime Service Inc., a Houston, Texas-based equipment sales and rental company, has acquired the Laporte, Texas, branch of Rental Tools and Equipment.

Erhardt & Leimer Inc., a manufacturer of web control systems, has acquired Alexeff-Snyder Enterprises Inc., Cleveland, Ohio. Alexeff-Snyder manufactures process control equipment.

WIKA Instrument Corp., a manufacturer of pressure and temperature instrumentation, has announced plans to acquire TREND Instruments Inc., a manufacturer of long-lasting thermometers.

 

REORGANIZATIONS
Thiele Kaolin Co., Sandersville, Ga., has opened a centralized customer service department at its Sandersville facility. This new department will simplify access to order and shipment information that was previously divided between the company's processing locations. The new department will allow Thiele customers to access information through a toll-free number, direct e-mail, or fax.

 

JOINT VENTURES
Raytheon Systems Co. has announced an alliance with Ross Systems Inc., a supplier of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to process manufacturing industries. This alliance brings together Raytheon Systems' experience in information systems and the functionality of the Ross Renaissance CS enterprise system to deliver shop floor planning and execution solutions to process manufacturers.

Huber Engineered Minerals has entered into a joint venture with Minerals Technologies (MTI) and Group Laperriere & Verreault (GL&V) to build and operate a state-of-the-art pilot-scale paper coating facility. The new facility, named Centre International de Couchage (CIC Inc.), will be built in Trois-Rivieres, Que., and will be used for customer support and paper coating technology development. The new facility will be operational in late 1999.

 

CERTIFICATIONS
GenCorp Specialty Polymers' Green Bay, Wis., facility has achieved ISO 9002 certification.

Eight Motion Industries locations have achieved ISO 9002 certification. These eight locations include: Muncie, Kokomo, and Indianapolis, Ind.; Fairfield, Ala.; Middletown, Marietta, and Newark, Ohio; and Miami, Fla. Motion Industries distributes bearings, hose products, and electrical and mechanical power transmission equipment.

Airgas Inc.'s Cheshire, Conn., specialty gases laboratory and production facility has received ISO 9002 certification.

Taber Industries, a supplier of test and measurement instruments headquartered in North Tonawanda, N.Y., has received ISO 9001 certification.

The Karhula, Finland, foundry of Ahlstrom Pumps has received ISO 14001 certification.

 

EXPANSIONS/MODERNIZATIONS
JWI Group, a supplier of paper machine clothing, has installed a high-speed computerized Jager loom that is the first wide loom of its kind for forming fabric products. The loom was recently started up at JWI's forming fabric facility in Warrendale, Pa. It runs 60% faster than the previous generation of loom technology.

Magnat Rolls has added two state-of-the-art machine tools that will expand the company's capability to produce precision industrial rolls. The two machines include Schenck Trebel's Model CAB-690 balancing instrumentation and a Clausing/Boravia large swing engine lathe.

Lonza, a manufacturer of specialty chemicals and additives headquartered in Fair Lawn, N.J., has opened a sales office in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This office will market the complete range of Lonza's specialty chemicals, including quaternary aluminum compounds, specialty surfactants, and other products.

Johnson Corp., a supplier of rotary joints and syphon and steam system designs, has opened a new service center at its Summerstown, Ont., manufacturing facility. The center offers installation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and onsite training.

Inpro/Seal Co., a Milan, Ill.-based manufacturer of bearing isolators, has expanded its manufacturing facilities to meet the demand for bearing isolators in IEEE electric motors. The 28,000 ft2 expansion houses 21 metal turning lathes, 11 of which are computer numerically controlled.

Magid Glove & Safety, a manufacturer of hand protection and safety equipment, has announced the opening of Magid de Mexico in Monterrey, Mexico. This distribution facility will offer the same Magid products and services that are sold in the U.S.

FESTech Software Solutions has opened new Cleveland, Ohio, offices that included training facilities and technical improvements.

 

NEW FACILITIES
Construction has begun in Mogadore, Ohio, on GenCorp Specialty Polymers' new $7 million pilot plant that will replace an existing facility at the site. Scheduled for completion in late 1999, it will support new product development and qualification.

Dunsirn Industries has opened a fourth U.S. web materials converting facility in Reno, Nev. The 90,000 ft2 facility has two high-speed duplex center surface winders and one surface drum winder, along with doctor winding capabilities.

 

MARKETING/LICENSING
According to an agreement signed by Valmet Calenders of Finland and V.I.B. of Germany, Valmet Calenders will globally sell and market V.I.B.'s Calender Steam Showers. The agreement covers various types of steam showers specifically designed for improving paper surface properties during calendering. The Calender Steam Showers covered by the contract will replace the ControSteam products currently supplied by Valmet.

Paper Converting Machine Co. (PCMC) has announced an international agreement with Italconverting of Lucca, Italy, that positions PCMC as Italconverting's sales and marketing team for North America, Latin America, Australia, and the Far East. Italconverting will continue to represent itself in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

 

NAME CHANGES
In order to better reflect the company's capabilities and successes in providing comprehensive process automation solutions, Moore Products Co. has changed its operational name to Moore Process Automation Solutions. This change expands the scope of business implied by the company's name from a supplier of individual products to a provider of comprehensive process automation solutions.

Siebe plc has changed the name of its Control Systems Div. to Siebe Intelligent Automation (SIA). The new identity recognizes the division's focus as an enterprise automation supplier offering sensor-to-boardroom products and services. To provide this range
of products, Siebe recently acquired Wonderware, a factory automation software company; Simulation Sciences, a process-modeling and optimization software supplier; and Eurotherm, a producer of recorders, instruments, gauges, and drives.

Sauk Valley Equipment Co., a supplier of fluid handling equipment, has become a member of the IFH Group and has changed its name to Innovative Fluid Handling Systems.

 

NEW COMPANIES
PECO Energy Co. has announced the launch of Exelon, a PECO Energy Enterprise that will compete in the growing energy market in Pennsylvania and nationwide. Exelon will offer onsite energy management, infrastructure, and energy performance services.

 

RELOCATIONS
Sonics & Materials Inc. has announced the completion of the move to its new 62,500 ft2 corporate headquarters and primary manufacturing facility in Newtown, Conn. Sonics manufactures thermoplastic assembly and ultrasonic liquid processing systems.
