Georgia-Pacific has selected Papertech Inc. to retrofit its one-year-old Hilcont camera system located on the No.5 paper machine at its Port Hudson, La., mill. Webvision cameras will be mounted on the front and back side of the Yankee roll, as well as the front and back side of the transfer section, just before the reel.

APC Paper Co. has ordered conical fills from the Lawton Co. for the RTC-1000 Pilao conical refiner at its Norfolk, N.Y., mill.

Aracruz Cellulose eucalyptus pulp mill in Espirito Santo, Brazil, has selected the Foxboro Co. to provide the mill with filed instrumentation, I/A Series control systems, and other associated services. Foxboro will also implement the company's advanced process control solutions for continuous pulping, washing, oxygen delignification, bleach plant, evaporators, and causticizing.

Green Bay Packaging has ordered conical fills from the Lawton Co. for the RTC-2000 Pilao conical refiner at its Green Bay, Wis., mill.

Ahlstrom Filtration has ordered an automatic slitter positioning system with Model PQA-DF-30 crush cut knife holders to be delivered to its Madisonville, Ky., facility.

Lwarcel Celulose e Paper Ltda. in LenÁois Paulista, Brazil, has installed an APV plate evaporator from Invensys Process Systems as part of an expansion project. Added to the existing six-body evaporator, the new evaporator will increase water evaporation from 170 ton/hr to 270 ton/hr and increase black liquor concentration from 49% to 72% total solids.

Weyerhaeuser has received rigid tubular heaters from Process Heating Co. for its Springfield, Ore., mill. These heaters will be used as part of the paper machine lube oil system and in hydraulic reservoirs to maintain oil temperature during downtime for maintenance or to increase to workable temperatures before startup.

Caraustar has ordered a gas infrared drying system from Marsden Inc. for its paperboard mill located in Sprague, Conn. This system will be installed following a coater in an effort to increase machine speed by 20%.

FF Soucy has ordered ABB Industrial equipment, including a scanner and a CD control, for quality control on the No.2 paper machine at its Riviere du Loup, Que., mill.

J&Y International Enterprises (J&Y) has announced its acquisition of Aqua-Chem Inc.'s pulp and paper evaporator business. The "Aqua-Chem" name and logo will be used with J&Y's in its marketing and sales efforts. In addition to acquiring the business, J&Y has hired all of Aqua-Chem's experienced pulp and paper design engineers, designers, and project managers.

Andritz AG has acquired Andritz-Ahlstrom. This acquisition is designed to strengthen Andritz's position in stock preparation, approach flow, and recycled fiber technologies. Upon the expiration of its cooperation agreement with Voith Paper in mid-2002, Andritz will combine these activities into a single division capable of offering complete systems, specialized equipment, and service. The company will offer overall systems for the stock preparation of chemical, mechanical, and recycled fibers.

Invensys Software Systems, a division of Invensys plc., has announced a major reorganization of its business operating units and related management structure. These changes are designed to provide a solid platform for developing, delivering, and supporting the division's integrated supply chain, automation, and business information solutions. The new organization includes two new focused product/technology/service groups and four new regional solution delivery businesses.

Sterling Chemicals Inc. and Sterling Chemicals Holdings Inc. have announced a voluntary petitioning for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code for most of its U.S. subsidiaries. The Chapter 11 filings are designed to allow the company to access additional working capital and reduce overall debt while continuing to operate its business in the ordinary course.

IMERYS' Pigments and Additives Group has announced that the restructuring initiaitve at its Georgia kaolin facilities was successfully implemented in the first and second quarter 2001. This initiative involved the shut down of 800,000 tons of paper grade kaolin capacity in Middle Georgia.

Voith Paper Inc. has added a new production line to its Neenah, Wis., roll covering service center, doubling the production capacity of calendar roll covers for the North American market. As part of the expansion, the company has installed process equipment intended to increase processing efficiencies.

The Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA) has announced that more than 80 vendors are currently developing hardware and software to the EtherNet/IP specification. Vendors building these products include Woodhead Connectivity/SST, Rockwell Automation, OMRON, Cutler-Hammer, and many other leaders in the manufacturing industry. This information comes from a survey conducted by ODVA, verifying significant support of its first open Ethernet-for-automation network with real-time control.

Solvay Minerals Inc. is increasing the price of its soda ash by $10/ton, or as contracts permit. The company will not exceed its published list pricing. This price increase is in response to higher costs due to increased natural gas prices, which continue at elevated levels, and to unacceptably low returns for the business.

Millennium Chemicals Inc. has announced that it will shut down part of its plant in Hawkins Point, Md., due to falling demand. The portion of the plant to be idled manufactures titanium dioxide. The closure will result in a layoff of approximately 300 people.

Poseidon Inc. has chosen Thermo Black Clawson Inc. (TBC) as its exclusive OEM supplier for its DAF technology for package delivery systems within the deinking, recycling, and OCC markets. Under the terms of the companies' agreement, Poseidon will not offers its technology to TBC competitors, and TBC will not offer other DAF technology to its customers. Poseidon is a manufacturer of dissolved air floatation for industrial wastewater, effluent treatment, and industrial process stream clarification. TBC is a supplier of fiberline process equipment and a designer and manufacturer of equipment used in paper recycling and chemical pulp and paper machine approach flow systems.
